The mindset of them all is that of children, so their behavior, especially with Wendy getting used to her adult body, as well as her passion to save her brother makes sense. Children are often rigid in their ways, and Wendy is showing that in how she wants her brother to live a good life without struggle.

Writers will use whatever they can to give themselves more options. There are likely canon like story arcs that were rejected from canon in the Alien franchise, and many others like Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and more.
