I hear it is starting to slowly radicalize a certain portion of the population.
The reason why it seems they've had no issue passing this bullshit however is because the UK (and the greater EU in general) is under a complete delusion that politicians are doing what's best for the population.
All these places will eagerly self describe themselves as liberal democracy. Thus any action taken or laws passed is assumed to be good for the population because democracy will correct course if it isn't.
They have been able to get away with it because most of what been happening is easily rationalized.

All the authoritarian measures are easily swallowed by the general population, like a bad medicine that taste like shit but you do it because you're told it's good for you.
It's going to take awhile for the population to realize the medicine isn't helping them and may be infact making them sicker.
