Isolating themselves is a common trope, but they are also often very involved in worldly affairs. Also, often before isolating themselves, they were very much the top-dogs in many settings and doing most of the important stuff in the lore.
Elves are cool because they often have a massive impact (for better or worse) on their settings world. Unfortunately, most settings focus on the time that comes afterwards, because we just need humans to be always the protagonists for self-insert reasons.

Having played and run plenty of WFRP, there was almost always an elf in the group, sometimes two. Was guilty of adding one myself by playing said elf.
Pretty sure, the only group that had zero elves was the one where the GM forced everyone to roll their characters entirely. For supposedly making up 2% of the players, they sure are popular. At this point, could understand if a GM wants to no elves in his party, for balance or narrative reasons.
Still want to run an all-elf Ulthuan game, once the summer is over.
