As someone who watches a lot of anime, I promise you thats not true. Shonen will always be the face of anime that outsiders see the most of, because Shonen is a powerhouse genre that drives sales, but anime is absolutely FULL of shows that are not shonen and in an extremely wide range of genres.
> horror comedy about a girl that can see ghosts but has to hide it, because ghosts get aggressive if they realize you can see them
> crime thriller about a walrus-man who drives a taxi who is the last person who saw a missing person alive
> After humanity is forced to flee the Earth after a deadly pandemic, a group of robots maintain and operate an empty hotel waiting for their human customers to come back, despite the fact that its been centuries since anyone heard from a human
> Girl who is too short to be a supermodel and guy who is good at designing clothes but is poor as shit try to break into the fashion industry together
> Internet streamers are forced into a death game run by lovecraftian outer gods for their amusement, with the fate of humanity depending on the outcome. Said outer gods only vaguely understand how games work
And so on. There is way more to anime than just buff little boys punching each other while screaming.
