It has a lot to do with center of gravity, I've no idea if this is taken in consideration when you're prototyping a figure however, as long as the weight is distributed on the "spine" of the figure I believe it won't lean, for example it's recommended for an amputee to use an prosthetic arm/hand to avoid losing the center of gravity due to uneven weight distribution.
