were there any real aztec/mayan societies or groups that still identified with their indigenous roots as late as the 19th century?

any sort of "aztec nationalism" or something similar? really curious if anything like that existed at the time of romantic nationalism, makes me wonder what it'd have been like if they gained statehood.

I know there are mesoamerica autists on this board. sperg out about it for me, I'm interested.
