McCain unironically supported a bill containing the main provision he opposed and that ended up being Trump's main accomplishment of 2017. The fact he told Jeff Flake to vote for it on his behalf rather than showing up in person led to its passage; thus, TCJA passed with about half of the "Skinny Repeal" within it, and "Skinny Repeal" itself failed.

The best part? It was specifically the part partially repealing Obamacare that got into TCJA. McCain had no rhyme or reason to him; he was just a brain tumor in the end.
