Archers are great. Dominate BG1, Great in BG2 fall off a little in late ToB, but still good. Go Short Bow or Crossbows. Archers are also good since they are one of the best uses for the Simulacrum from Vhalior's Helm. You don't really need more than two melee frontliners, and there are lots of options for that like Jaheira, Anomen, or Haer'Dalis. My suggestion is to play what you want. You can always find a party that will make it work around you.
