I don't think people would have a problem with "trans women" in particular if we had the Western cultural equivalent of a ladyboy.
Because of the unique history of our brand of feminism over the last 100+ years, a biological male unironically calling himself a woman is going to ruffle some feathers. Blame the specter of the patriarchy or whatever. Most normies don't have the mental vocabulary to discuss the cognitive processes that lead to such an absurd assertion. Crossdressers and "transsexualism" are easier to understand.
