Gimpguy back. I decided to make a second attempt at digging some more information out of this image -- this time with a goal of minimizing color manipulation. Although the color inversion that I did before yielded immediate results in exposing edges, I went a different direction this time. So here's what I did, step-by-step:
>1] Open in GIMP
>2] Crop center area @ 360x270 pixels
>3] Save to a new .xcf file
>4] Scale image to 1440x1080 [a 4x increase] and increase pixel depth to 72ppi from 25.4
>5] Colors -> Color Balance, Select Range -> Midtones, drop Red to -100%, boost Blue to +100%
>6] Export JPG to show initial definition result
