Ancient Egypt utilized papyrus, a material derived from the Cyperus papyrus plant (also known as Egyptian Nile Grass or Paper Reed / reid). Papyrus was the first paper ever made and served as a crucial writing surface for ancient Egyptians for approximately 4,000 years. The word "paper" itself is believed to be derived from the Egyptian word for papyrus, "Pa-prro".
In ancient Egypt, the process involved:
Harvesting the tall, reed-like stalks of the papyrus plant.
Peeling away the outer green rind to expose the soft, white inner pith.
Cutting this pith into thin strips.
Laying the strips out in two layers, one horizontal and one vertical, creating a crisscross pattern.
Pressing these layers together, allowing the natural plant juices to bind the strips.
Drying the sheets under the sun and polishing them with smooth stones.
Modern grass paper
Modern "grass paper" is a relatively new and sustainable alternative to traditional wood pulp paper. It's made using grass fibers, typically from dried hay sourced from compensation areas or nature reserves, according to Karl Knauer. This hay is cleaned, mechanically shredded, and pressed into pellets, which are then used in the papermaking process.
Similarities and differences
Both use grass-like plants: Papyrus comes from the Cyperus papyrus plant, while grass paper uses hay from grasses.
