Ever seen those studies on peer pressure? Not everyone caves, only about 80-90% do.
I remember an interesting one where they gave people pieces of paper with lines on them, and asked them which was longest or shortest, line A, B, C, or D. The person was led to believe that everyone else was also a random participant like themselves, but in fact they were the only ones, every time. The lines were quite obviously different in length to the right answer was clear. However, the twist was that all of the other participants would choose the wrong answer, and this would be additionally rewarded by the person conducting the study (the authority figure) saying that was correct. The vast majority of people would fall in line and select the same obviously wrong answer as everyone else, and only a few had the strength and individuality to stand by their answers every time.
