The awful thing is circumstances were orchestrated so that Iran would have every incentive to aquire nukes. See pic related for their playbook. The entire strategy was to degrade Iran's conventional detterence options so that there'd be a plausible reason for Iran to speedrun for nuclear deterrence, then leverage that to do an air war and assassination campaign to reduce iran to a failed state (like syria), then install a puppet regime (like syria).
So the only true winning move for iran would have actually been to develop and credibly deploy nuclear weapons, and do so before Israel and the USA could defeat them. Once they get nukes, a failed-state Iran ceases to be a win condition for israel, as rogue revenge nukes become a dangerous possibility
