You're silly, that's not how that works. Practice your backgrounds anon, if they make your illustrations worse you need to practice more fundamentals like your planes, values, construction, composition and how to draw focal points. If you're doing it right the background will compliment, contrast and draw the focus to your characters. Backgrounds are also a great way to tell a story without saying any words, they can make your work more memorable and provocative.

Just like everything else when you originally started? Grab your pen and just practice, it's what these threads are for anon. You're not going to get better if you never try, sometimes you've got to leave your comfort zone. You'll eventually get better and you'll be glad you put in the effort.
