I have a slightly different take - I think the symbols serve as resonances of power that, when correctly aligned, allow one to better interface with "God", the Source, a higher state of conscious thinking, etc.
Maybe we're saying the same thing again (or not) - but I see it as these symbols being like puzzle pieces of a universe that God has left for us to discover and fit together, in order to reach a higher state of understanding.
Turning the symbols into the actual emanations of power is what turns them into idolatry though. We don't worship, for example, a perfect circle drawn on a chalkboard.
