We are condemned to be free, and in that freedom, we encounter both privilege and luck. One is not born privileged, but rather becomes privileged through the gaze of the Other and the circumstances into which one is thrown.

Yet, to recognize one’s luck is itself a privilege, and to deny it is bad faith. The privileged man is free to choose his essence, but his choices are shaped by the facticity of his situation—his luck, his privilege, his thrownness.

Still, existence precedes essence, and so privilege is only what we make of it. Or perhaps privilege is nothingness, a void we fill with meaning. In the end, to reflect on privilege is to exercise the privilege of reflection. Beyond that, all is absurd.
