Honestly I think they were probably planning canon story given the dlc character picks (when they went back and said those characters were not needed I think that was just pr to not ruin the surprise), but due to a lot of shit behind the scenes post-patch like the mike z lawsuit and autumn games owing money to Future Club, leading to their departure, probably threw a massive wrench in those plans
