This sounds good on paper but when you have dozens of strings and you're fighting three or four fast enemies you're simply not going to do combos.
A simple solution would be to simplify strings and/or make certain types of strings not work into offset, which would add another layer of strategy to the game. E.g. if you make the killing part of the move limited to Y and make Y reset offset so that you would have to commit to X, Y to get a killing finisher but not to the X sections of the combo.
