I think it's older than that, I think it accelerated with Hollywood movies and government propaganda about the idealized life with the idealized people with the idealized path.
Not different from when people used to dream to move to LA and make it big, or finishing school to make it into their dream job. Systematically institutions failed to teach young people how good is enough for a good life and to enjoy the small things, they got distracted with "reaching their full potential" What use is to direct your life to reach the top if you are not happy? what use is to lift the bar if everyone is miserable? People are too busy competing with others when they should be competing with themselves. Reminds me of fight club
