It does sound crazy put like that.

I'll try to explain.
To men, sex is the big prize. When we are still young, sex is the emotional, social and self-validating prize you get when you give your all to a woman. It is ingrained in our brains that a woman having sex with you is like the lady of the lake offering you the magic sword that will make you KING.
This example may help you understand all these different situations and maybe even empathise with men.

So what happens to men?
well, imagine you are a young man and you just found the lady of the lake that will give you your sword. you give it your all, but then you see the lady of the lake give the symbolic sword to some other dude. That dude proudly raises his new sword for all to see, and then turns to you and says: "I didn't even have to work hard for this sword, I just have these cool clothes that lake ladies like, this is like my 5th sword". So heartbroken, you move on and eventually find another lake lady. You start doing the same thing as before, you try to prove yourself to the lake lady but after much effort she suddenly walks out of the lake to hand the sword to another man that was just passing by. You keep trying and trying, you find out lake ladies can give more than 1 sword. but still you can't get one.
At this point the man learns the following:
Your will and passion towards getting the sword has nothing to do with you actually getting it, there is simply this set of things you can do to increase your chances to get a king sword.
