He's 80. Their skin is like paper at that point. They bruise after a gentle breeze, their skin tears if it comes into contact with anything slightly coarse, and it all results in increasingly gnarly scarring.
He very well could have gotten that burn just from saluting in the sun for a few minutes, it's that easy.
I can't imagine what would happen if something genuinely traumatic happened to someone with skin that age, like a bullet wound or something. Even a small caliber bullet would probably do catastrophic damage and leave them permanently disfigured.
