sometimes this happens to hard rock/metal bands when they have some mainstream success
metal fans are pretty loyal but if the band starts writing poppier tunes and suddenly they're all over radio + television and normies are loving them then the band might be in danger of alienating the original fanbase and once OG fans start drifting away its hard to ever get them back
maybe a couple years later the hits have dried up the normie fans will disappear along with them cos normie fans are very fickle, they tend to like current thing until current thing is no longer current then they just move on to next current thing without a second thought
meanwhile the band suddenly finds both their original fanbase and their normie fanbase has dwindled to a fraction of its former glory and they can't even sell out a small venue anymore

this is pretty much what happened to kiss in the late 70s as they went more pop/disco and their sound became less and less hard rock, took them years to win back their OG fans
