I live in a D state, and in a VERY D town. I've seen people IRL, in person, make that same argument. My internal shorthand is it's the "the strawberries MUST be picked" argument. I'm not hanging around these people for any length of time but I spend a lot of time later wondering exactly what their day-to-day reality must be like.
