Watch it season by season, and if you hit a point when you start feeling like the show's not "for you" anymore, finish that season and drop it, then wiki any lore questions you still have.
The show had the same problem as Steven Universe where it starts going off in a certain direction that gains fans but loses others as the showrunners get more freedom to do whatever they want.

NGL, in both cases in both shows, it felt like the showrunners acted like going to new places and adventuring bored them and that after the shows got enough "pull", they're like "fuck yeah, now we can get to the REAL show" and then the remainder of the show plays out like a female weeb's shipping fanfic.
Which is, again, a good thing for some people.
Out of the two, I'd say AT probably got it worse though since you could tell the show got handed off to someone who didn't really like Finn much, maybe hated him.
