Italian states were incredibly relevant until the end of the 16th century.They controled nearly all of european trade, started the renaissance, were heavily involved in the age of discovery by financing portuguese explorers and people like henry the navigator besides being involved themselves(colombus was italian). I could make an entire book by listing inventions from Florence, their cultural impact on the entire world is tremendous and their military one too with the invention of things like the Star Fort. Even fucking Napoleon is Italian, Europe owes everything to Italy.
