After reading "experimental gas" and seeing the visored image, I thought this was going to be about The Comet.

Tthis Golden Age hero debuted in Pep Comics #1 in January 1940.
Ater ego: John Dickering, a scientist who injected himself with a gas 50 times lighter than hydrogen..
Powers: He could fly and fire deadly "dissolvo-vision" beams from his eyes, which could be blocked by glass.
Legacy: In 1941, Comet became the first superhero to be killed in a comic, leading his brother to become the hero Hangman.

Notes: you don't want any gas in your bloodstream. Doctors always squeeze a little fluid out of the hypodermic before putting it in your arm. An air bubble would cause an embolism and maybe stop your heart.
Ordinary glass blocked his deadly vision. Has any Marvel villain thought of wearing ruby armor when going up against Cyclops?
