So I was brought up in Lutheran catechism and I cannot express how hilarious it was how most of it was just talking about how Catholicism got it wrong. I was never religious though and still don't buy into it.

I always loved studying religions. Learning the differences between the denominations of the Abrahamic. Hindu and east Asian beliefs. It's been fun. Still none the more religious but "Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning."

Anyway I found a book a while back that covers every single split in the church and what ideologies caused the separations. Will give you a great view of where and who interpreted the scriptures to the point we see them today.
