It's actually entirely possible that humans are the first sapient life capable of creating a complex civilization period. Such a species has only evolved once in the ~4 billion years that life has existed on Earth. Most stars aren't as stable as our sun. The evolution of multicellular life itself took billions of years, never mind intelligent life. Even once intelligence emerges, the planet itself might not be properly conditioned to allow for the formation of complex civilization. For all we know we're alone in a universe that at best has oceans of bacterial soup.

Of course the opposite is equally likely, maybe the conditions for intelligence are actually common and other species have evolved well past us. We just have no actual clue anon. All possibilities are equally probably until we start getting some kind of sample size that isn't just Earth.
