Both the Ultra nationalists and the JSP were protesting against the light sentencing of American GIs over an incident involving a woman being shot while collecting brass casings from a shooting range on an American base. The ultra-nationalists viewed this incident as a factor of why Japan needs to be entirely sovereign from control from outside powers while the JSP used this incident as reason to trade American occupation for Chinese occupation. The Ultra-nationalists disagreed with the JSP's stance and formed counter protests but one student believed that wouldn't be enough so he stabbed the head of the JSP during one of his speeches which actually caused the JSP to completely collapse in support over the next few years.
