>government intervention in the free market
on behalf of monopolies with so much capital they are able to change legislation to prop themselves up. If you're really arguing that bailing out the banks was somehow fucking socialism then I'm afraid the language here has completely broken down and this entire conversation has been a waste of time.
>As opposed to what?
Sustainability. Regulating production so that labor and land isn't burnt away in pursuit of aggressive short term growth.
>Would it be more efficient to not have a garbage island if the result was more expensive waste disposal?
It would be more efficient to ensure we don't produce more waste than we can realistically manage in the first place. Maybe start by having a smaller population. Maybe don't produce so much plastic. Opt for less profitable, less scalable but more sustainable alternatives to plastics to ensure the ocean, which is essential to life on earth, can survive. A company that abides by such principles loses to a company that prioritizes immediate short term growth and ignores long term environmental destruction.
What's more profitable? Permaculture or industrial farming? Now what's more efficient long term?
