I don't want to be truly great, I want to be happy.
Even if I work absurdly hard to achieve top 1% in a skill, I'd still be unhappy that there are still 0.9% left. And if I did truly become #1, would that even fulfill me? I don't know.
Would anyone outside of the initiates of that particular skill even care about me? Unlikely.
Truly intelligent people will realize, at some point, that it's ok to just enjoy yourself and coast through life being naturally above average at most things. If people seethe at you for not working hard, that's just their own insecurities bubbling to the surface.
