I worked there one summer. I wasn’t the dancing type. I was kinda shy, quiet, not really the kid who joined in.

Manager was this blonde woman obsessed with “team spirit.” Every shift she made us do the Chicken Dance in front of the customers. Arms flapping, hips wiggling, everyone laughing. I stood still.

She noticed. After that, she stopped giving me normal shifts. My job became pushing carts in the heat and scooping diarrhea out of the cup holders. That was actually my main duty. Some kid would shit himself in the backseat of a minivan and I’d be out there with gloves and paper towels while the Chicken Dance played inside like a soundtrack to my humiliation.

One time she made the whole crew circle around me, flapping their arms while I pushed a train of carts back in. Customers joined in, clapping, chanting. I just kept my head down, red-faced, sweating, wishing I could disappear.

I never quit in some dramatic way. I finished the summer. Collected my last paycheck. But it stuck with me. To this day if I hear the Chicken Dance, my chest tightens and I feel like I’m back in that parking lot, hands covered in filth, everyone laughing and flapping their arms.
