Local schooler Ichigo who can see ghosts has chance encounter with soul reaper Rukia and she ends up making him a substitute soul reaper after accidentally giving him all of her powers when she was injured by a hollow. This gets her sentenced to death so Ichigo and friends have to go to the soul society to save. More shit happens but I would have to get into each arc and a lot of spoilers. They also use swords instead of scythes.
If you do plan to check it out, read the manga, anime changes a lot in the beginning and Kubo’s artwork is a treat. He really understands drawing in black and white.
