I don't know exactly what the build quality was for n64 controllers but I remember some of my friends having worn down analogs on theirs, so that tracks. Like there was some type of dust from the plastic breaking down as they got spun around. Probably had to do with how much force you could put on it compared to how awkwardly you would need to hold a dual stick to do the same thing. I also didn't own any xbox controllers so I can't speak to that.
As for my own experiences, the Ps2 controllers were likely very early manufacturing runs. Same with the GC controllers. I had a 3rd party wireless logitech and a madcatz. The madcatz broke after like 3 months and the logitech works fine but the receivers fried themselves so I can't speak to how that one could've gone.
Is there really nobody trying to make actually durable controllers? I know xbox (and maybe sony) both sold some super-premium versions of their controllers recently but they were also plagued with the same issues regarding stick drift, etc.
