Like every school growing up had the "weeb girl", usually a fat girl that was obsessed with Inuyasha, did dorky anime dances, would glomp you in the halls, and wore the most unfashionable shit possible as a half-cosplay of her favorite characters. 100% of these girls were autistic too. Their boyfriend is probably the dweebiest most basic asian guy that just happened to be the only asian in your school because she's that obsessed with Asia.
Nowadays every zoomer girl has some kinda anime keychain or graphic tee but most of them don't actually watch anime. They don't project their power level at all, anime is just a fashion statement for them. They might go to cons just to socialize and buy merch for shows they don't watch. Their boyfriend is the captain of the football team. They don't really care about Japan beyond what they see on tiktok or what's trendy. It's more "cool" to like anime these days, provided you don't go so far as actually watching anime.
It's a very different culture, arguably much harder to bag a genuine "weeb gf" but much easier to encounter anime/weeb adjacent stuff in public. People are also less likely to judge you for liking that stuff so it's not all bad.
