In Russian peasant culture unwed girls were free to show off their hair, often woven into long braids.
Married women tended to conceal their hair when in public. There is even a surviving, if somewhat archaic, term for a social blunder or faux-pas that is derived from the words "just the hair", referring to showing up with an unclad head, obviously.

Personally I'm all for adjusting fashion to closer match the type of clothing our forefathers wore. Loose-fitting garments, bisected by a tight belt. Kaftans maybe even. Pic related.
