The only way Miquella could actually control people with grace, for a very brief moment, is through charming branches, that are needles exactly because the whole point is stabbing the enemy with a needle which counters for a brief moment his own real grace. The whole point of St. Trina's contribution to this is that sleep yields the power to separate the individual from his grace, exactly what brings solace to those afflicted by madness (which is in itself corrupted grace) and stops NPCs from being compelled to attack the Tarnished.
