Historically, “rabbi” in the modern sense (ordained Jewish teacher) didn’t exist in Jesus’s lifetime. The rabbinic system developed fully after the destruction of the Second Temple (70 CE).
There is no historical evidence that the people calling Jesus “rabbi” were Levites, nor that Levites as a group converted to following him. His disciples were mostly Galilean Jews, some fishermen, a tax collector, etc.
