A double-edged sword, the worst GM I ever personally experienced was also the wake-up call that made me realize I was That Guy making the game unfun for other players. Its a shitty thing to do, and I would have come to that realization eventually on my own as I grew up (I was just a shitty teenager), but ultimately I got better because of it.
>Regular group for many years
>All friends with minor gripes, the usual stuff any friend group has with enough time together
>We all jabbed at each other in good humor, except for much later when it wasn't in good humor anymore and somebody actually got mad and left
>But thats a lot later
>Playing World of Darkness
>My rolls are fucking terrible and I'm not enjoying myself because I can't accomplish even simple tasks
>GM is explicitly targeting my character for mistreatment by NPCs
>Confront him about it in front of the group
>He admits it, says he doesn't like me
>Half the group has an issue with it, half the group agrees
>None of them willing to take my side over the GM's though so I'm effectively blackballed from all future campaigns
>Still on the fringes, play in short side campaigns here and there
>Group implodes due to self-inflicted drama
I went years without playing any games after this before I found another group online willing to put up with my growing pains as a Forever GM. For my part I did the research into good and bad GM's and listened to what my players wanted. Today my guiding light is that no matter how much someone at my table pisses me off, I never sink so low as that GM who targeted me.
