i think they were genuinely meant to be Word Bearers in the first few games but then a bunch of external stuff like BL meddling and the Horus Heresy made them Thousand Sons instead
I kinda prefer them as Word Bearers but it doesn't really make much of a difference, they're their own thing now so who they descended from 10,000 years previously isn't that big of a deal
