Jew here.
The khazarians though historically important are for the most part dead. They do however compose atleast in some part what the ancients would have considered the "ashkenazi".
This however is irrelevant in modern terms because what are we to make of american Jews like myself?
If the ashkenazi were those jews to the north of Syria then who would the modern jews of north and south America be considered to be? As the khazars were an empire and not an ethnicity. And the ashkenazi were not an ethnicity at that time but simply a reference to the jews that fled/lived in the north during and after the destruction of the second temple.
The khazarians themselves are a large puzzle piece in the creation of both Russia and Poland. Both of the former, two countries today that consider themselves descended from the empires of that time, yet khazaria is nowhere and most would have it stay that way for good.
It's best to have khazaria play a part in the Christianization of the region in history than to have it poke it's head out in the present where it isn't needed.
