The download puts it on your device, but it’s inaccessible app data in a proprietary data/file type, and it can only operate with the YouTube player. They limit you to force reliance, but who expected otherwise?

If you need to download a YouTube vid last I tried a couple years back you could still do so with VLC, I was clipping vids this way to save edited sections as webms. Don’t know if they patched this out yet.
