Trump to Host Zelenskyy for Talks After Alaska Summit with Putin Ends Without Ceasefire Deal
U.S. President Donald Trump is set to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Monday, following a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska that concluded without an agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
The high-stakes meeting between the U.S. and Russian leaders on Friday, August 15, ended after nearly three hours with no concrete deal on a ceasefire. In subsequent remarks, Putin noted the two sides had reached an "understanding," while Trump stated, "There's no deal until there's a deal," though he described the talks as "extremely productive."
Following the summit, President Trump confirmed in an interview with Fox News and on social media that the focus has shifted from a ceasefire to a comprehensive peace agreement. He indicated that such a deal might involve territorial concessions, a point he reportedly discussed with Putin. "I think we're pretty close to a deal," Trump told Fox News, adding, "Ukraine has to agree to it. Maybe they'll say no."
President Zelenskyy has consistently rejected the possibility of ceding Ukrainian territory. He confirmed he would travel to Washington for the Monday meeting after a phone call with Trump, during which he was briefed on the talks with Putin. Zelenskyy has expressed support for a trilateral summit format involving Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia.
The upcoming meeting in Washington is expected to see the Trump administration press for a resolution, with the U.S. president publicly stating his advice to Zelenskyy is to "make a deal." European leaders, who were also briefed by Trump, have welcomed the diplomatic efforts but reaffirmed the importance of Ukraine's territorial integrity and the need for robust security guarantees.
