I suggest you watch Deathrace 2050, the true sequel to the first. Not the Jason Statham reboot, not the Luke Goss DTV pablum.
But also, if you can, track down & read Deathrace 2020, the comic sequel to the first movie. It's out in the cyber-ether, if you know where to look.
