Because that was an ice age period. As I stated earlier in this thread, civilizations need durable and regular crops to thrive. If there's a famine, the people abandon their civilization and look for food elsewhere. Those civilizations are either taken by the elements, or the materials are repurposed for a new civilization. There is nothing complex about what has happened.
