They migrated south over time, being the later arrivals compared to China. We have recent discoveries in meso america as late as im 1970 realizing that the Mayan had a pictographic written language similar to Egyptian heiroglygics. The city state capital for the Aztec had running water in every house through a complicated aquadct system. We even found toys they made for their children that were Llamas with wheels for feet so they could scoot across the floor, when before we thought they didnt discover the wheel, they just had no use for wagons when living in such a mountainous region, and could transfer messages by giving a courier a bag of knots and sending him running to the next town over was much faster than trying to navigate it by wagon wheel.
