Yeah it's weird, they were this sorta peripheral ooga booga desert people for all of recorded history (Sumerians, Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Persians etc. all dealt with Arabs but they never truly rivalled any of these polities) then they had this mega-chimpout that stretched from Spain to India and China because some schizo guy hated Trinitarianism and Icons before they faded into second tier relevance in their own Empire and it's successors within like 200 years.
