Fuel is consumed. If their supply was endless they wouldn't need to try and harvest other shards. The whole point of them trying to branch out from their shard is due to the fact that the only way for them to sustain their way of life is by constantly feeding off the aether of living "human" beans. Once that aether is used it's gone. If they could recycle it then it wouldn't matter.
