That is because a god is what humans make of the perceived essence of reality through space and time, old habits die hard, catholicism (and orthodoxy) has that many saints because it came in world filled with a plethora of minor gods required for people to interact with their medium, most people prefer to have a broker rather than do the very protestant thing of trying to directly undertand the laws of the universe (this in turn resulted in the scientific-industrial revolution). Praying to a local saint(apu) feels to a peasant more intimate and specialized than going to the top of the cosmic pyramid, and there is a hierarchical structure.
Even a religion like budhism evolved in a similar way, with local saints and gods helping the average man on the street.
Is this proof the supernatural exist? Personally what I think is there are aspects of existence which shouldn't be forced into a financial and scientific framework, at best you may see cause and effect, but it is dangerous to reduce everything to mathematical formulae. How do you justify, say, human existence or having children when you try to make a spreadsheet of it?
