Trust takes time to build. It's not enough to just be nice one time.

I often feed the cats that wander around my neighborhood. You can tell which ones are strays vs the ones that belong to somebody based on how they act around people. The latter approach you and want to be petted immediately, whereas the strays are cautious and constantly shooting side glances at you even after you feed them a few times.

It's funny watching other people interact with them. A lot of people are clueless and think all animals want to be doted on by people (probably from watching too many Ghibli or Disney films). I've seen people on the street approach them and call them over like it's a playful puppy dog only to get confused when the cat just sits there staring at them.
